In Defence of Public Servants. IPANZ was deeply concerned to see the piece written by Kate Hawkesby, making a very personal attack on Dr Ashley Bloomfield. This demolition of an individual public servant in this manner "crosses the line" as said by Peter Hughes. She knows that, as with all public servants, Dr Bloomfield cannot respond to, or refute, the claim that he is a "recidivist under performer". I wonder if New Zealanders can imagine what it is like to have your performance, character and actions described so negatively, so publicly. Why does he persevere and not just quietly move on in the way Hawkesby seems to recommend? Because he is absolutely committed to doing his very best in the extraordinary circumstances he faces. No private sector leader experiences this public scrutiny, on our screens, day after day after day for months, fronting to the public and the media. He is required to have a vast command of facts, updated in real time in a context New Zealand has not encountered before. IPANZ believes that he has indeed been "dissected, analysed, and critiqued" in a way we have not seen applied to a private sector leader. Of course, the COVID response must be scrutinised and challenged. Of course, governments and public servants do not get everything right in this fast moving and unchartered environment. They make mistakes. But evidence shows public leaders face greater scrutiny than their private sector counterparts, not less. Surely people like Kate Hawkesby could draw back from these personal attacks on public servants. Dr Bloomfield has done so much so well. He deserves to be out of the firing line while he gets on with his remarkably difficult job. #newzealand #government #leadership #publicservice (See Hawkesby's and Hughes' comments below) https://lnkd.in/g9mBRpMg https://lnkd.in/geJ3HugG

His behaviours and character speak to us daily … intelligent people will see that … her attack speaks volumes about who she is

Cant believe how lucky NZ is having Ashley as DG of Health during this time. Pretty sure his commitment to public service will ensure he remains focused on the mission at hand despite the grenades thrown by some who dont need to understand the complexity of what is being dealt with. If he is an underperformer there is little hope for the rest of us.

A Totara tree unwavering and committed to keeping the people of Aotearoa New Zealand front and center during these challenging and Traumatic times , oranga tangata oranga whanau. Is what Dr Ashley Bloomfield about. These continued barrage of whole picking, malicious, hurtful Comments from people like Kate are Nor Westerly for me don't give oxygen to people like her. Love Comments of his considered thinking and preparation he dies before fronting up with data, with a very good team behind providing up to date communication. I have faith and belief in Ashley and that given the enormity and magnitude of all this information hes able to honestly report back to us. Kate its not the time or place for you to provide unnecessary negative comments about our Leader, and crawl back under the rock you come out of,expected more from you. E te Rangatira a Ashley mahi tonu, carry on with what your been doing and carry on doing we as in Aotearoa New Zealand appreciate you

Most of the time I couldn’t care less what rubbish KH spouts - would not give it oxygen. In this case though I’m glad people are voicing their rejection of her reckons. The subject of her venom can’t publicly defend himself, and frankly has much better things to do. Legend.

I think its very healthy for a society to make leaders and managers accountable, this can be done through interviews. To lodge an attack through media without right of reply is plain cowardise

I think if hawksby and her equally crass partner Hoskins disappeared tomorrow they would not be misse d. Unlike many public servants they contribute nothing positive to society and line their pockets with public money spreading lies and scandal . Twats

And people ask me why I don't watch live TV (apart from Al Jazeera since its the only source of decent international broadcast news here in NZ), listen to any radio station other than RNZ news, or read national newspapers by choice. NZ journalism is like trashy FaceBook scourge style click-bait now, overlaid more recently with an immense cancel-culture. Unfortunately this class of people in public media roles have immense sway on a small number of very 'non-critical thinking' individuals who know how to make their echo-chambers very 'loud'.

She only has a platform, because such attacks are clickbait deliberately intended to stoke the most atavistic impulses in the people who read her column. The media make money from this crass behaviour and they should be ashamed of themselves. This woman was pushing for an opening of our borders midway through last year and now is condemning Dr. Bloomfield for the Delta variant now loose in our community, after the government bowed to pressure to do the very same thing she advocated for? I call that hypocrisy of the highest order. "So, accepting there'll be human failures and that no border is foolproof, we also need to understand our risk is very low. If our border is tight, our ability to contain it and to trace any cases, will protect us. We can't stay in total isolation just waiting for a vaccine." https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-air/early-edition/opinion/kate-hawkesby-global-praise-is-hollow-without-open-borders/

Very disappointing, unjustified, unnecessarily personal and just plain unfair. … … And completely ridiculous - comparing a highly qualified health specialist with wide-ranging leadership experience across DHBs and the WHO…. with … a rugby coach - ? NZ, we are better than this. https://www.health.govt.nz/news-media/news-items/introducing-ashley-bloomfield
