Bullying in the Public Service
Our expert panel of Steph Dyhrberg, Nicholas Pole and Debbie Francis provided a very lively and insightful discussion on bullying in the workplace and across our society.
We heard from the panel that bullying is endemic in our schools (New Zealand has the highest rate of school bullying in the OECD!). This flows through to bullying being a serious problem in our workplaces too. And while many executive teams feel that they have “nailed it,” staff generally disagree.

Local Government Funding and Financing - a report by the Productivity Commission
Murray Sherwin, Chair of the Productivity Commission shared the findings from the Productivity Commission's 2019 inquiry into local government funding and financing. The government is yet to respond to the findings/recommendations of the report.

2019 State of the State Series
To conclude the State of the State 2019 series, Deloitte and IPANZ held a workshop with 40 people from community, government, health and social organisations. Participants were asked to consider each of Deloitte’s six recommendations and what actions could be taken to enable real change.

IPANZ 2019 End of Year Event - The Political Year in Review
We held our popular End of Year Event – The Political Year in Review on Wednesday 4 December 2019. After a break in 2018, interest was high and attendees weren’t disappointed with the insights and discussion from guest speakers – Tracy Watkins, Bernard Hickey and Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard - a big thank you to our speakers and to our facilitator, Spiro Anastasiou, who created a great atmosphere.

The Tamaki Regeneration Company is designing and establishing an intensive support service for whanau living in crisis. They have had to learn how to adapt and tailor the co-design process to make it safe, meaningful and empowering. They are still learning on this journey, and shared with attendees some early experiences and insights from this work.

New Professionals - Meet the Chiefs Breakfast with Brook Barrington
The New Professionals leadership team, hosted the last of the Meet the Chiefs sessions for 2019 with Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet Chief Executive, Brook Barrington. In this session, with very candid insights into Brook’s career journey, he spoke about how we need to bring out our best selves in our jobs - only then can a person grow in a job. He also urged attendees to learn and stretch - when you have the choice between an easy or a hard career option, choose the hard one.

The establishment of Te Arawhiti – The Office for Māori Crown Relations, reinforces the government’s commitment to building strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across all of government. IPANZ is helping public sector professionals to build their confidence and skills with our refreshed Effective Engagement with Māori course.

Public Sector Complexity and Accountability
In his address, Len Cook talked about some of the critical issues for the public sector coming in to 2020. He focused particularly upon public accountability, especially to citizens, to Maori and the most vulnerable and explore with the audience what evidence we use to assess how we are performing and the validity of this evidence.
