Artificial Intelligence and the Public Sector: Opportunities and pitfalls

IPANZ, and the Wellington School of Business and Government at Victoria University of Wellington | Te Herenga Waka, present “Artificial Intelligence and the Public Sector: Opportunities and pitfalls”. An active discussion between academics and practitioners – focused on what is useful and realistic in practice.

Join us as we hear from Prof Markus Luczak-Roesch, Chair in Complexity Science and Professor of Informatics, Victoria University of Wellington and Hazel Darney, PhD candidate, Victoria University of Wellington.

Markus will talk to his research “A case for a national data infrastructure to move forward with AI the human-centred way” which will explore what data infrastructure is and why AI needs data infrastructures.

Hazel Darney will then discuss the topic of contestable AI - Why do we need to be able to contest (disagree with/protest/appeal) AI decisions? What discourages or facilitates a user to contest/appeal when they disagree with an AI decision's outcome or process? And importantly, how can AI systems be designed to support a user's contestation? Hazel's research explores this issue from our understanding of human decision-making and action to take a more human-centred perspective on how we can best offer contestable AI systems.
